Abstract

Portugal has been an independent state since the 12th century; until 1910 it was a monarchy. The last King was Manoel II of the house of Eraganza-Coburg, born 15 November, 1889, younger son of King Carlos I and Queen Mary Amélie, daughter of Philippe Count of Paris; he died 2 July, 1932. On October 5, 1910, the republic was proclaimed, after a short revolution, and a provisional government established with Dr. Teophilo Braga as the provisional president (5 October, 1910, to 24 August, 1911). Thereafter there were duly elected Presidents, as follows:—
