Abstract
From 1517 Egypt was part of the Turkish Empire. In 1882 internal disorders led to British military intervention, and on 18 December, 1914, a British Protectorate over Egypt was declared, and the next day a proclamation was issued deposing Abbas Hilmi, lately Khedive of Egypt, and conferring the title of Sultan of Egypt upon Hussein Kamil, eldest living prince of the family of Mohamed Ali. Sultan Hussein Kamil died in 1917, and was succeeded by his brother as Sultan Fuad. The protectorate terminated on 28 February, 1922, and the Sultan was proclaimed king on 15 March, 1922, since when Egypt has been an independent state.
