William I., King of Prussia, born March 22, 1797, the second son of King Frederick William III. and of Princess Louise of Meek-lenburg-Strelitz; educated for the military career, and took part in the campaigns of 1813 and 1815 against France; appointed Governor of the province of Pomerania, 1810; lied from Prussia to England, March 20, 1818; elected member of the Constituent Assembly for Wiesitz, Posen, May 15, 1848; returned to Berlin and took seat in the Assembly, June 8, 1848; Commander-in-chief of the Prussian troops against the revolutionary army of Baden, June 1849; appointed Military Governor of the Rhine provinces, Oct. 1, 1849; appointed Regent of the kingdom during the mental illness of his brother, Oct. 9, 1858; ascended the throne at the death of his brother, Jan. 2, 1861.
