Abstract
Art crime continues to be one of the most prevailing crime issues in the world. Theft of works of art robs us of our cultural heritage, our identity, our memories and impacts the past, present and future. Protecting works of art from theft is a constant challenge for cultural heritage place managers. This chapter focuses on the common theme of opportunity that typically exists in incidents of art theft and outlines the principles of situational crime prevention as a means to protect works of art from theft. Also explained are the contemporary knowledge and skills needed of those responsible for the protection of works of art from theft.
