Abstract

The bringing together of diverse fairy tales and fairytale versions creates new connotations that the gothic adds to in intricate and haunting ways. Although the transgressive potential of the films examined in this book is not fully (or finally) realized, female agency and desire are given some degree of credence, if only through imagined worlds and fantastical visions. The findings of this study suggest that it is repression itself rather than the return of the repressed that propagates much of the horror in the films examined.
