Abstract

The main aim of the review is to present the potential of analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) in biology to physicists. It is based on the presentations made in Advances in AUC and hydrodynamics, a practical and lecture course (61–8 June 2002) and the following Euro Conference (8–11 June 2002) in Autrans, France. The specificities of biological materials compared with those of polymers or colloid physics and the reason why AUC is so powerful in routine studies and how it can address more complex systems are presented.

Acknowledgements Thanks are due to Guiseppe Zaccai for a critical reading of the manuscript and to Beate Bersch and Adriana Irimia for providing Figs. 1 and 2.

This contribution was presented at the 13th International Symposium on Analytical Ultracentrifugation, Osnabrück, 6–7 March 2003
