Abstract
A brief overview of the occurrence and biological activity of carbazole alkaloids is provided. Recent progress in the development of novel methodologies for the synthesis of substituted biologically active carbazole alkaloids is summarized. The described methods are based on the transition metal-mediated oxidative coupling of arylamines with unsaturated six-membered hydrocarbons, thus leading to highly convergent total syntheses of the envisaged natural products. The advantages of this strategy, as well as the scope and limitations of the different procedures, are discussed.
