Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter and answering the questions that follow, you should be able to

  • Identify the various manifestations of undernutrition (hunger, undernourishment, stunting, wasting, underweight, protein-energy malnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency) and describe their management and control.

  • Identify the global magnitude of obesity among women and children.

  • Identify and discuss the various biological, environmental, sociocultural, and behavioral factors that underlie malnutrition (overnutrition and undernutrition) among women and children.

  • Appraise the evidence base of interventions to prevent malnutrition among women and children and assess the feasibility of achieving the Millennium Development Goal target of reducing by half of 1990 figures, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.
