Artificial Host Molecules for the Sensing of Anions

The foundations of supramolecular complexation of anions by abiotic host compounds are evaluated, with the purpose of determining their qualitative and quantitative preference over competing species. Starting from a critical assessment of binding models, the perspective goal in terms of molecular thermodynamics is defined and discussed. General consequences for the strategic design of artificial anion hosts are delineated and their translation into receptor structures is suggested. The usage of the available fundamental interaction types for anion binding is illustrated with the help of prototypical, yet concrete, receptors of proven utility.
