The impact of infrared astronomy on the distance scale

Abstract

There is a dramatic impact of infra-red astronomy on the cepheid distance criterion: not only the effects of absorption and reddening are much lowered in H-band, but also those of chemical composition variations and temperature differences across the instability strip.

The impact on the Tully-Fisher distance criterion is not so obvious. It is shown that the Malmquist bias and the cluster incompleteness bias, which have been underestimated or even ignored, are the predominant effects.
