Perforated vesicles in ternary surfactant systems of alkyl-dimethylaminoxide cosurfactants and water

Abstract

The phase diagrams of the ternary surfactant systems dodecyldimethylaminoxide (C12DMAO)/hexanol/water and tetradecyldimethylaminoxide (C14DMAO)/heptanol/water are reported for small surfactant concentrations. With increasing concentration we find a L 1-, a L*1-, a Lal-, a L*3-, a Lah- and a L3-phase. The L 1-, L*1-, L*3- and the L 3-phase are optically isotropic, while the L a -phases are birefringent. — Besides some macroscopic properties like rheological and conductivity data, we also report on freeze fracture electron micrographs. These were made from the samples in the actual phase regions and show the different microstructures. In the L a -phase at low cosurfactant concentration, we found uni- and multilamellar vesicles with a large polydispersity. The bilayers of the vesicles show defects that can be seen best after etching the fracture plane for a short time. These vesicles we have called perforated.
