Critical behavior of smectic liquid crystals

The occurrence of a critical point in smectic liquid crystal is experimetnally evidenced by i) broadening of the Bragg peak of the coexisting lamellar phases, and ii) strong scattering at low angle in the vicinity of the critical point, where the concentration and periodicity difference between the two phases in equilibrium vanishes. First approximate values of the critical exponents are given.
