Effects of surface fluctuations studied in a two-dimensional emulsion
In a soluble model we account for the effects of geometrical shape fluctuations on the equilibrium properties of a polydisperse two-dimensional emulsion. The emulsion consists of closed loops moving in a plane. Interactions within a droplet include bending rigidity and spontaneous curvature. Interactions between droplets are omitted. The free energies of the droplets take rigorous account of all possible droplet shapes. After a grand canonical summation the droplet size distribution is found for arbitrary temperature. Calculations show that the fluctuation dominated regime extends to temperatures far lower than expected from a mean field calculation.
