Electrical properties of polystyrene particles from negative electrolyte adsorption measurements
The surface charge density of the polystyrene particles was determined from the concentration and activity of a binary electrolyte added to the latex dispersion. The distribution of ions was calculated by means of the non-linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation and cell model. The effective charge of the latex particles was found to be smaller than the analytical charge. The particle charge was constant when the macro ions were compressed into smaller volumes and, unexpectedly, it was independent of the ionic strength in the range investigated. It was concluded that the small effective charge cannot be interpreted by specific binding of counter ions to the particles.
