Abstract
The phase behavior of polyoxyethylene modified silicone (PEOS) in water and water-oil system was investigated. In a water system, hydrophilic PEOS, whose HLB value is 13, forms only a hexagonal liquid crystal phase, while lamellar and reverse hexagonal phases are produced in a lipophilic PEOS (HLB value=6) system. In the latter system, these liquid crystals are formed at a rather high surfactant concentration compared to an ordinary polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactant-water system. The detailed structures of these liquid crystals were determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).
The ternary phase diagrams of water/lipophilic PEOS/silicone oil or hexadecane were also constructed at constant temperature (25 °C). In the case of silicone oil, the reverse micellar solution or W/O microemulsion (Om) solubilizes a large amount of water whereas the surfactant is practically insoluble in hexadecane.
