Abstract
The present study is an attempt to apply a lumped parametric model for suspended sediment flow rates to a mountain river. The relationships between rainfall, runoff and suspended sediment are examined. By estimating the model parameters, hydrographs and sediment graphs of the Lainbach river were regenerated for measured rainfalls. Observed and regenerated graphs were compared using the integral square error. The results show that the model parameters vary from storm event to storm event and a unique set of parameters cannot be applied. While the regeneration of the hydrographs can be classified in all cases as “very good” or better, only 3 out of 6 events show a “good” rating for the sediment graphs. The problem of modelling suspended sediment concentration in small, inhomogeneous watersheds is emphasized.
