Abstract

The sediments from Eocene Eckfelder Maar display a cycle from an initial clastic stage via organic oil shale deposition to a final clastic stage. Increasing aridity is related with the onset of oil shale formation, increasing freshwater input with the gradual change from organic back to final clastic deposition. Eutrophic conditions occurred only during a short period of the early oil shale stage related to maximum organic carbon and oxygen isotope values and to the formation of pyrite and vivianite.
