Abstract

Transferring the basic principles of the theory of rubber elasticitiy of a Gaussian network, an analogous description of crystal-networks is presented. This treatment is based on defining equivalent subsystems of deformation the properties of which are related to basic parameters of the microstructure in the partially crystallized systems as well as to essential parameters of the chain structure. The quasi static moduli of various random copolymers of ethylene can be computed quantitatively dependent on the temperature employing also a known thermodynamic theory of melting of such polymer systems. The discussion of the results yields an interesting classification of the deformation mechanism at small strains in partially crystallized polymer systems with different degrees of crystallinity.
