Particle interactions in colloidal dispersions of PMMA-latex in benzene

Abstract

The preparation of monodispers crosslinked PMMA-latex by aqueous emulsion polymerization is described. Light scattering of these particles in benzene as a function of scattering angle showed structure formation at higher latex concentrations. The results are discussed in terms of the structure function, S(K), and are compared with liquid state theory for a hard sphere repulsion. Viscosity and sedimentation experiments as a function of concentration gave independently information on the swelling and type of interaction of these microgel particles.
