Abstract
The influence of added wate on polyoxyethylene dodecyl ethers was investigated by NMR and IR. At 35†C the water was equally distributed among all the groups in the oxyethylene chain, but did not completely surround the ether linkage closest to the alkyl chain until the water concentration was high. At 70 °C the ether formed aggregates as soon as water was added, so that the water never penetrated to the innermost ether linkage.
Water added to solutions of trioxyethylene dodecyl ether and octanoic acid containing a complex of about 3 acid and 1 ether molecules caused a removal of the acid from the complex.
