Abstract

The rheological properties of a homoglucan produced by Schizophyllum commune were investigated in water and dimethylsulfoixde (DMSO). Aqueous solutions of the polymer showed non-Newtonian character at concentrations of about 0.1% (w/v), and thixotropic behavior was observed. The apparent viscosity of aqueous solutions was not influenced by high salt concentrations and also showed high stability from pH=2−12. The solutions showed Newtonian character in DMSO at polymer concentrations of about 0.1% (w/v). Moreover, the dependency of the apparent viscosity on the polymer concentration was investigated in water and DMSO. The intrinsic viscosities of the polymer in these two solvents were determined by graphic extrapolation of the reduced viscoisty to polymer concentration=0. From these intrinsic viscosities the average molecular weight of the polysaccharide in water and DMSO was calculated.
