Abstract

Cationic as well as anionic surfactants influence the transport properties of cellulose acetate membranes. The rejection of the surfactants is decreased when electrolytes are added to the solution and can reach negative values at low pressures. Likewise, the volume flow is lower when the solution contains electrolytes and surfactants. Adsorption and the gel layer are responsible for the effects which can be better demonstrated using membranes that are not highly desalting.
