Abstract

Two dimensional pattern formation during the phase transitions between the liquid expanded phase and various condensed phases in Langmuir monolayers is observed by fluorescence microscopy. For fatty acids, circular or fractal domains are generated, depending on temperature. The analysis of their geometrical properties yields information on characteristic lengths involved in this diffusion-controlled growth process and on line tension. For acyl-amino-acis, spectacular dendritic grwoth is observed. We have checked the predicted theoretical laws of shape selection (p 2V = constant, V: tip growth velocity; p: tip curvature radius). From this, an estimation of the line tension anisotropy can be obtained.
