Abstract
The spontaneous formation of α-helices from chiral biological molecules in homogeneous aqueous solutions — gyrotropic electrolytes (GE) — is modeled as an instability caused by transverse fluctuations of the polarization due to the redistribution of mobile charges within the GE [3]. The chiral molecules condense in a cylindrical geometry, which is influenced by the chirality. Such an ordering is known to be characteristic for molecules like DNA, RNA or certain proteins, hence, the suggested theory may explain some basic processes occurring in the structuring of biological molecules.
