Abstract

The high frequency (4×104<ω<4×105 s−1) surface viscoelasticity of aqueous solutions of some primary alcohols has been studied by light scattering from capillary waves. The principal conclusion is that the surface dilational viscosity appears to have negative values. From the effects of such negative surface viscosity it is shown that the experiments could reliably distinguish between positive and negative values. Certain features of the results can be accounted for by a straightforward extension of the theory of diffusion controlled surfactant exchange between bulk and surface. However, quantitative agreement is not found and further theoretical work is required.
