Abstract

We present here new magnetic liquids: aqueous sols of MnFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 particles. The chemical synthesis of these ionic ferrofluids is performed in two steps:

  • — coprecipitation of chemically stable fine grains;

  • — ionic stabilization of these grains to get stable colloidal aqueous solutions.

These ferrofluids contain anionic or cationic particles, of typical size ranging from 5 nm to 15 nm, with a volume frafction which can be as large as 25%. Superparamagnetic behavior of liquid solutions allows to characterize particle internal structure. Magnetization measurements on magnetic grains trapped in a gelatin array clearly show the large difference in anisotropy constant of the two ferrites. Strong remanence of CoFe2O4 particles is turned to account, realizing a crystal growth of microscopic needles under magnetic field.
