Abstract
The formation of chains of polystyrene spheres in an aqueous suspension submitted to an electric field is studied by light scattering. We analyse the change in the diffraction pattern from an isotropic to a very anisotropic structure. The dynamics of the breakdown of the chains by Brownian motion, when the field is switched off, is studied by recording the decrease of the scattered intensity. The coefficient of diffusion perpendicular to the chain is obtained and compared to some theoretical predictions.
