Abstract

Aerosol OT (AOT) exhibits a pronounced tendency towards reverse curvature, forming w/o droplets in the L 2 region of the phase diagram in the three-component water/cyclohexane/AOT system. The net curvature of the interfacial layer can be tuned by complexing AOT’s sodium ion with the cryptand Kryptofix 222 (Kr 222). With increasing Kryptofix, a structural evolution occurs from w/o droplets through a bicontinuous system to o/w droplets. This contribution focuses on the structural changes which occur in the L 2 phase upon addition of 0.25 equivalent of Kr 222. Results from PGSE 1H-FTNMR and static SANS measurements lead to the conclusion that the AOT droplets decrease in size and exhibit a significant increase in the droplet-droplet interaction when the Kr 222 is added.
