Phase behavior and properties of micellar solutions of mixed zwitterionic and ionic surfactants

Abstract

The charge density on micelles from alkyldimethyl-aminoxide was varied continuously by mixing the zwitterionic surfactant with ionic surfactants. The sign of the charge is of importance for the behavior of the micellar solutions. Large synergistic effects are observed for the combination of zwitterionic with anionic surfactants, but not with zwitterionic and cationic surfactants. The differences in the behavior are reflected in the values of the surface and interfacial tension, in the sphere-rod transition, in the general phase behavior and in the properties of mixed micellar solutions.
