Submicron particles with thin polymer shells

Abstract

The general conditions for the formation of thin polymeric shells on nm-sized particles in aqueous emulsion polymerization systems are discussed. The core-shell structure of the particles was verified by small-angle scattering (x-ray, neutrons) and electron microscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and vibrational spectroscopy were applied to determine thickness and chemical composition of the interfacial layer between core and shell polymer.
