The problem of stability of a silica hydrosol in presence of various aliphatic alcohols

Abstract

The stability of a silica hydrosol in the presence of simple aliphatic alcohols was investigated via measuring the coagulation kinetics of the silica particles. Formation of aggregates was measured by photon correlation spectroscopy. The hydrosol stability decreased in the order of methanol, iso-propanol, ethanol, propanol and n-butanol added to the hydrosol. The effect is ascribed to hydrophobic particles-particle interaction. They exposed roll of isoprophyl alcohol could be manifested by testing the water structure modifying properties of the alcohols using the CU++-ion as a spectroscopic probe for the state of water structure in the alcoholic solution.
