Physical processes during the long-time decay of the surface potential of thin films

Abstract

The time decay of the surface potential U s of thin polymer layers was measured. It was found that for time t>t d (t d is the characteristic quantity of the sample) the decay of U s can be described by the formula U s ∼ exp[−(tt d)/τ d]1/2 where τ d is the material constant. We explain this behaviour as a diffusion process of the space charge. The value of the constant τ d is interpreted in terms of the microscopic material parameters.
