Abstract
We have demonstrated the transfer of both population and momentum (8hk) in a multilevel system by adiabatic following of a slowly evolving light field. Spontaneous emission is suppressed because the atoms remain in a ‘dark’ state during their evolution. This technique will be useful for the realization of coherent, large angle atomic beam splitters. Our results are in good agreement with calculations using the optical Bloch equations.
