Abstract
We show that reflectometry can be used as an accurate tool to study the swelling of latex particles adsorbed on a silica surface. The reflectivity of a layer of adsorbed latex spheres can be easily calculated using Mie theory, provided one neglects the electromagnetic interactions between particles and between particles and substrate. The validity of this simple model has been investigated thoroughly. The results can be used to advantage in the study of the swelling of polymer particles by an organic solvent. Within the validity of the assumptions underlying the simplified model we can detect changes in particle size as small as 0.5 nm.
