Abstract

The German national scientific networking association, DFN, will provide a gigabit network (G-WiN) in spring 2000. The paper analyzes history and trend of DFN network throughput, bandwidth, and cost, and the traditional and innovative load to be carried by the network is evaluated and forecast. Testbeds, which promote gigabit applications and pilot technology, are described. The current status of G-WiN specification is compared to US projects.
