Abstract

We report the investigation of two dimensional magnetic polarons formed from excitons localized in nonmagnetic CdTe quantum wells confined by Cd1−XMnXTe semimagnetic barriers. Magnetic polarons have been found in quantum wells thinner than 30 Å where the penetration of exciton wavefunctions into the barriers are considerable. Dynamics of the magnetic polaron formation has been studied by use of picosecond time-resolved luminescence. The anisotropic polaron behaviour in external magnetic fields has demonstrated the two dimensional character of the magnetic polarons in quantum wells. The two dimensional magnetic polaron is suggested as a probe of frustrated antiferromagnetism at heterointerfaces between magnetic and nomagnetic semiconductors.
