Abstract

MBE grown II–VI semiconductor quantum well nanostructures, using the semimagnetic (Zn,Mn)- or (Cd,Mn)- chalcogenides as wells or barriers, are of special interest as a wide tuning of the potential parameters is possible by an external magnetic field, due to the strong s,p-d exchange interaction. The confinement and magnetic-field effects for free and bound excitons and donor-acceptor pair DAP transitions are demonstrated for CdTe/(Cd,Mn)Te structures as an example. Two actual problems are discussed more extensively: (1) The magneto-optical anisotropy of semimagnetic quantum well structures caused by misfit-induced strain. (2) The efficient excition transfer between the two wells of asymmetric double quantum well structures.
