Abstract
Nonlinear spectroscopy allows to study optical processes where the induced polarization depends in higher order on the external photon fields. After some general remarks on the expected magnitude of nonlinear optical effects and their inherent additional degrees of freedom specific examples of x(2) and x(3) spectroscopy in solids are discussed.
