Abstract

The availability of high brightness synchrotron radiation has enabled x-ray diffraction to become a standard technique for the determination of surface structures and investigating phase transitions. In this article the basic concepts necessary for understanding surface diffraction experiments are introduced. The development of the technique over the past decade is reviewed as a historical survey as perceived by the author with numerous examples and references.
