Zusammenfassung
Unter einem Polariton versteht ein mit einem Photon gekoppeltes Quasi-Teilchen in einem Kristall. Als z.Z. wichtigstes Beispiel eines Polaritons wird das Phonon-Polariton im einzelnen behandelt. Die Eigenschaften dieses Polaritons lassen sich aus den mit den Maxwell'schen Gleichungen kombinierten Grundgleichungen für die langen optischen Gitterschwingungen herleiten. Als einführendes Beispiel wird das zweiatomige kubische Ionengitter (NaCl, ZnS u.a.) ausführlich behandelt (Theorie nach Huang). Besonders interessant und für die Anwendungen wichtig sind die Polaritonen in ein-und zweiachsigen Kristallen. die Ergebnisse werden für Tellur und α-Quarz numerisch ausgewertet. In den weiteren Abschnitten wird der Ultrarot- und Raman-Effekt an Polaritonen und der Einfluß der Dämpfung auf die Eigenschaften der Polaritonen behandelt. Besonders aktuell ist das Phonon-Polariton geworden, als es im Jahre 1969 am LiNbO3 erstmalig gelang, die Polaritonen mit Hilfe des stimulierten Raman-Effekts als kohärente Schwingungen hoher Intensität anzuregen. Auf diese hochinteressanten neuesten Entwicklungen kann jedoch nur fragmentarisch eingegangen werden (letzter Abschnitt), da die Theorie des stimulierten Raman-Effekts an Polaritonen sich erst in den Anfängen befindet.
