Intermittent dynamics and aging in glassy systems

Abstract

We discuss in details the so-called ‘aging’ phenomenon, which appears in a large variety of ‘glassy’ systems, including spin-glasses, polymers, or glassy liquids. Simple models accounting for this aging phenomenon are introduced and compared (in particular insights obtained via mean field models, and their possible limitations). We discuss the ‘trap model’ which describes intermittent dynamics in real or phase-space, where the aging phenomenon appears in a particularly interesting way. Finally, we introduce the idea of ‘self-induced’ quenched disorder, which allows to treat disordered and non disordered (but complex) systems on a similar footing.
