At the limit of device miniaturization

Abstract

Some striking quantum phenomena discovered in small conductors, insulators and capacitors over the recent years are described. It is argued that while these phenomena may render further miniaturization of the present electronic devices difficult, they may constitute the principle of operation of the next generation of devices.
