Abstract

In this lecture we review the properties of interacting electrons near two-dimensional van Hove singularities in the framework of a renormalization group approach. We carry out the discussion making contact with the phenomenology of the copper-oxide superconductors, showing that several properties, like the development of a flat band and the pinning of the Fermi level at the van Hove singularities, can be reproduced unambiguously.
