Abstract

A summary of the observational status of measurements of peculiar velocities in the local universe is given. Special emphasis is devoted to the discussion of applications of the Tully-Fisher technique and its limitations. Preliminary results are presented regarding the motions of two samples of galaxies with measured peculiar velocities: one including 24 clusters of galaxies and a second of field objects, the latter being used to test for large amplitude bulk flow in the peculiar velocity field.
