Abstract

A passive scalar, advected by a turbulent flow, with an imposed mean gradient, shows a remarkable spatial organization. The scalar is well mixed in large regions of space, and large gradients build up in ‘cliff’ like structures. This leads to a small-scale anisotropy, easily seen at the level of the skewness (third order moment). The possible implications of this effect in turbulent shear flow are discussed.
