Une des principales caractéristiques de la turbulence pleinement développée est l'accroissement considérable des coefficients de transport du fluide. L'importance relative de la diffusion turbulente et de la diffusion moléculaire se mesure par un paramètre appelé le nombre de Reynolds, qui caractérise également le rapport entre les termes non linéaires et le terme de dissipation visqueuse dans les équations de Navier-Stokes. Une simulation numérique directe d'un écoulement turbulent n'est possible que pour des nombres de Reynolds modérés. A grand nombre de Reynolds, une prédiction déterministe des grandes échelles suppose une paramétrisation correcte des petites échelles, et est rendue impossible à long terme à cause de la propagation dans les grandes échelles de l'incertitude initiale sur les petites échelles (imprédicibilité). On rappelle la théorie phénoménologique de KOLMOGOROV et la loi de RICHARDSON. On présente les théories statistiques dérivées de la théorie quasi-normale (théorie quasi-normale markovianisée avec amortissement turbulent EDQNM). Ces théories conduisent, à viscosité nulle, à une divergence de l'enstrophie (vorticité carrée moyenne) au bout d'un temps fini, ainsi qu'à une dissipation finie d'énergie cinétique. On interprète ces résultats comme une transition entre écoulement laminaire et écoulement turbulent. On propose enfin, dans le cas instationnaire du problème d'évolution, une méthode de paramétrisation compatible avec l'apparition d'un spectre de KOLMOGOROV au bout d'un temps fini.
