Abstract

A linear functional representation of hydrodynamic actions on ships during small departures from steady motion ahead provides insight into the nature and known shortcomings of conventional ‘slow motion derivatives’. The forms of the functionals may be found by means of a planar motion mechanism (PMM). If PMM results are interpreted directly in terms of derivatives, the results obtained may be substantially in error.
