Abstract
Sound ranging of detonations or similar short sounds in the atmosphere may be done in a mathematically very simple manner if only sound rays travelling along the surface of the ground are considered. The evaluation of sound rays which are raised temporarily to higher layers of the atmosphere is rather complicated. The following exposition describes the difficulties and the attempts to deal with them.
