Abstract

Supergravity, a new fermionic gauge theory unifying gravitation with spin, is described and some of its achievements and problems assessed. The theory is governed by a vector field whose values lie in a graded Lie algebra rather than the usual Poincaré algebra, and corresponds to a Dirac square root of general relativity.

Based on a lecture delivered at the conference on Differential Geometric Methods in Mathematical Physics, Bonn 1977.
