How important are regge cuts?

Abstract

A review is given of recent progress in trying to justify the eikonal prescription for generating Regge cuts, and we outline the different types of cut models which have been proposed. The various features of two-body reactions which cannot readily be explained by the Regge pole model are surveyed, and for each problem we try to decide how far the different cut models can offer a solution. It is concluded that there is very little need for cuts at all in helicity-flip amplitudes; indeed even weak cuts seem to make matters worse. On the other hand for non-flip amplitudes very strong cuts are needed, even stronger than those of the Michigan model in some cases. We find that none of the presently available models is really favoured by the experimental data.
